Based in Dunston, just outside Lincoln means that the city has always been a special place for us at Cliffside. With a rich and vibrant history, Lincoln has so many interesting places to see and things to do. Here are our top five things to do when you’re next in Lincoln.

Lincoln Cathedral

No visit to Lincoln is complete without seeing the cathedral. Work began in 1088 and finished in 1311 on this beautiful building. It held the record for being the tallest building in the world for 238 years until its spire was damaged in 1549. A beautiful example of medieval and gothic architecture, it’s the third largest British cathedral after St Paul’s and York Minster.

Lincoln Castle

One of the best-preserved castles in England, Lincoln castle is unusual in that it has two mottes. With so much still intact including the impressive Norman walls, it’s amazing that it’s stood here since the 1100s. It’s definitely worth a trip just for the amazing views across the city. It holds one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta so is definitely one to tick off for history lovers.

Whisby Nature Reserve

If you love making the most of what nature has to offer, Whisby Nature Park has many trails to get lost in. The Moor is surrounded by woodland and has a lake; if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of a Nightingale, Swallow or Emperor Dragonfly. The Natural World Centre lets you make a day of it with an adventure play area and a café as well as a shop with local gifts.

Steep Hill

This is a popular and historic street with the Cathedral sat at the top of it. As the name suggests, the hill has a steep gradient but is definitely worth a visit if you want to attempt it. With Norman and Tudor buildings along the hill as well as pubs and shops; it’s the perfect example of a medieval English street.

Lincoln Christmas Market

If you’re near Lincoln during the festive season, the Christmas market is a must. It’s one of the largest in Europe and was the first one to start in Britain. It often tops the poll for the best Christmas market in both the UK and Europe. As well as hundreds of stalls, there’s live music, a funfair and even beer barrel rolling. With the beautiful backdrop of Lincoln Castle and Cathedral, it’s the perfect place to stock up on some gifts.
