How Should I Prepare My Home for Window Installation?

You’ve chosen your new windows, the quote is approved, and installation is booked. Now you’re probably wondering what you need to do before the installers arrive. Should you move all your furniture? Do you need to take blinds and curtains down in advance? What about your pets?

Here’s the straightforward answer: your installers will handle most of the practical work, but some simple preparation on your part makes the job faster, smoother, and less stressful for everyone involved.

Preparing for window installation isn’t complicated. It mostly involves clearing access, protecting belongings you care about, and knowing what to expect on the day. After 50 years of installing windows across Lincolnshire, we’ve learned that well-prepared installations run more smoothly and finish faster.

What Should Your Installer Take Care Of?

Before discussing your preparation, let’s clarify what professional installers are usually responsible for:

Protecting your property: Reputable installers bring dust sheets to cover floors and nearby furniture.

Removing old windows: This is entirely the installer’s responsibility. You should never remove existing windows yourself or arrange separate disposal.

Cleaning up: Your installer should remove all debris, old windows, packaging materials, and leave the area tidy.

Minor damage repair: If installers accidentally damage paintwork or plaster during removal, they should make good or arrange repair.

If an installer suggests you need to handle these tasks, consider it a warning sign.

The Double-Glazing Preparation Checklist

Inside Your Home

Clear access to windows: Create 1-2 metres of clear space around each window. Installers need room to manoeuvre, use tools safely, and fit new windows without obstacles.

Remove window sill items: Clear ornaments, plants, photographs, and anything else sitting on window sills. Vibration from removal work can cause items to fall.

Take down curtains and blinds: Remove curtain poles, blinds, and window dressings. This prevents damage and speeds up the job. If you’re unsure how to remove something, ask when booking.

Protect valuable items: Move expensive electronics, antiques, or delicate ornaments to another room. Window installation can create dust and vibration. Cover large furniture with old sheets.

Outside Your Home

Clear paths to windows: Move plant pots, garden furniture, bikes, and obstacles blocking access to exterior walls.

Unlock gates: Ensure side gates or back access are unlocked on installation day.

Move vehicles: Park away from the house to allow space for the installer’s van and equipment.

Check ladder access: For upper-floor windows, ensure there’s firm, level ground for safe ladder placement.

What About Pets and Children on Installation Day?

Secure pets in a separate room: Keep pets away from installation work with doors closed. Windows being removed create temporary openings – even well-behaved pets might escape.

Inform your installer: Let the team know you have pets, even if they’re secured.

Supervise young children: Installation sites aren’t safe for unsupervised children. Tools, glass, and open windows create genuine hazards. Set children up in a room away from work with activities to keep them occupied.

What to Expect on Installation Day

Timing: Most installers arrive between 8-9am and confirm the day before. A typical three-bedroom house with 8-10 windows takes 1-2 days. Each window takes 1-2 hours.

Noise and dust: Removing old windows involves drilling, hammering, and power tools. Expect it to be loud. Despite dust sheets, some mess is unavoidable – plan to vacuum thoroughly afterwards.

Temperature: Rooms will be cold whilst old windows are out and new ones aren’t yet sealed.

Security during work: There will be brief periods (15-30 minutes per window) where old windows are removed and new ones aren’t yet fitted. Installers work systematically, completing each window before moving to the next.

Other rooms: Installers work room by room. Rooms not being worked on remain fully usable throughout.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

Occasionally, removing old windows reveals unexpected issues, such as structural damage. Reputable installers will stop, show you the problem, explain options, and provide costs before proceeding.

What Happens After Installation?

Keep new windows closed for 24 hours to allow sealant to cure properly. Wait 24-48 hours before cleaning, then use mild soapy water. Don’t block trickle vents – they’re essential for preventing condensation. Your FENSA certificate should arrive within 4-6 weeks – keep it with important home documents as you’ll need it when selling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to remove all furniture from rooms?

No, just create 1-2 metres of clear space around each window. Heavy items like wardrobes can stay in place if there’s working room.

Should I arrange to be out during installation?

Ideally, you should stay close to home. Installers may have questions, and you need to inspect work before they leave.

Will installers move furniture for me?

Some will move light furniture as a courtesy, but it’s not their responsibility. Prepare in advance – installers aren’t insured to move your belongings.

What if installation takes longer than expected?

Complications can extend work into an extra working day. Your installer should communicate clearly about timing and complete work properly rather than rushing.

Making Installation Day Stress-Free

Window installation doesn’t need to be stressful. Simple preparation and realistic expectations make the process straightforward. A couple of hours moving furniture and clearing access makes a significant difference to how efficiently the work progresses.
